bass catching lures

Do rainbow trout bass lures work to catch bass in a lake with no rainbow trout?
ive heard they do because its something they’ve never seen before….? thanks.
Yes! One of the largest bass stringers I have ever seen came from a local lake in Louisiana. by a friend of mine. Since there are no rainbow trout in the state, I can only assume that they hit the lure because they had not seen it a thousand times before. But there could be other reasons involved. But since bass fishing is not an exact science,we can only assume certain things.

Catching Tales $11.14 British pianist/vocalist Jamie Cullum’s previous effort, Twentysomething, was an uncomplicated mix of piano-driven melodic pop with a jazzy twist and some reworked jazz standards. 2005’s Catching Tales follows a similar format but falls short of its predecessor’s simple approach by muddying up the production with dated electronic flourishes. Which isn’t to say it’s a bad album. On the contrary, despite some ill-advised attempts at would-be-hip DJ-style tracks, Catching Tales features more of Cullum’s superb songwriting. Essentially a singer/songwriter in the tradition of such icons as Billy Joel and Randy Newman, Cullum is at his best when performing simple melodic songs with some jazz harmony that make the most of his burnished croon and verbal wit. To these ends, the beautifully melancholy “London Skies” brings to mind Joe Jackson covering a Radiohead song. Similarly, the romantic and folky “Photograph” reveals the often sardonically snotty Cullum to be a top-notch balladeer. It’s also at these soft rock moments, when he isn’t attempting to gun down the jazz canon, that Cullum’s improvisation sounds the best. Also impressive is his mid-tempo swing-cum-soul track “Nothing I Do,” which marries Harry Connick, Jr.’s neo-croon to Stevie Wonder’s R&B harmonies. If Cullum’s only attempt at contemporary hipness was his inspired cover version of the Doves’ “Catch the Sun,” the album would be a rousing success. Unfortunately though, Cullum’s expansive vision finds him collaborating with Dan the Automator on the leadoff track, “Get Your Way.” What may have been an attempt to try something new ultimately sounds more like early-’90s hip-hop jazz à la Digable Planets replete with scratchy vinyl record sound and canned beat. Also disappointing is his reworking of the Harry Warren classic “I Only Have Eyes for You,” which, while an attempt at a Massive Attack-style trip-hop track, sounds more like U2’s equally atrocious 1990 Cole Porter redo “Night and Day.” However, when Cullum sticks to his piano and a good melody Catching Tales actually bests Twentysomething and easily shakes the “new-jazz” tag he has been working against. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi Performers: Ben Cullum – Bass (Electric), Vocals (Background); Geoff Gascoyne – Bass (Acoustic); Isabella Cannell – Vocals (Background), Voices; Jamie Cullum – Omnichord, Wurlitzer, Xylophone, Moog Synthesizer, Organ (Hammond), Fender Rhodes, Guitar, Percussion, Piano, Vocals; Mark Emms – Voices, Vocals (Background); Terri Walker – Voices, Vocals (B |

Catching Up $13.58 Dick Cary, best known as a utility pianist, trumpeter, and alto horn player with trad bands in the 1950s, was also an inventive arranger/composer. For years on Tuesday nights he had a rehearsal band that played his many charts, which literally numbered in the thousands. It was not until after his death in 1994 that his ensemble finally began to record. This release for the Klavier label finds the band led by Dick Hamilton (who, like Cary, triples on trumpet, alto horn, and piano) and including such notables as trumpeter Jack Trott; Betty O’Hara on trombone, baritone horn, and double bell euphonium; clarinetist Abe Most; and Tommy Newsome on reeds. The music mixes together aspects of trad and 1950s West Coast jazz with Cary’s own musical personality, and the swinging results sound both traditional and quite modern. Thirteen of the 16 numbers are Cary’s (two of the other pieces are unusual reworkings of “Black and Blue” and “Shimmy Sha Wobble”). The intriguing set is well worth exploring. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Betty O’Hara – Horn (Baritone), Double Bell Euphonium, Trombone; Randall Aldcroft – Horn (Baritone); Dick Hamilton – Horn (Alto), Trumpet, Piano; Ernie Tack – Trombone (Bass); Abe Most – Clarinet; Dave Koonse – Guitar; Fred Cooper – Sax (Baritone); Herb Mickman – Bass; Jack Trott – Trumpet; |

Catching Yourself Gracefully $12.78 A nice excursion in piano jazz. The songs essentially alternate between new compositions by Green and old standards from various ends of the jazz realm. On the standards end he shows off Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale,” a Duke Ellington number, and “Back at the Chicken Shack,” all with a reasonable amount of technical prowess, and a bit of soul in the latter. It’s in his own compositions that Green handles himself with more feeling in general. “Green Eggs and Funk” gives him room to romp around the keys, kept in rhythm pretty well with a little bit of a catchy beat in the background provided by Phil Gratteau. “Coyote Samba” runs a similar course, but rather more subdued. “Wrong Again” gives Green a chance to emulate Bill Evans to the best of his ability. The album finishes up on the Jimmy Smith number quite well. For a nice look at a bit of contemporary piano jazz, this album does well. Make sure you’ve referenced the classics he’s covering first, though. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi Performers: Jim Cox – Bass; Phil Gratteau – Drums; Tim Green – Piano |
