Falkirk’s Old Favourites
Today in Falkirk and surrounding districts, we are fortunate enough to have a wide range of retail opportunities across the range. We can all enjoy the convenience of shopping in the major retail giants, such as TESCO, ASDA, MORRISONS, MARKS AND SPENCER, CO-OPERATIVE/SOMERFIELD, for food and many other items. Nowadays of course the major supermarket giants stock a wide range of goods, from clothes, electrical/household goods, furnishings, make-up…….oh the list is endless!
Importantly, we also continue to enjoy the pleasure of buying individual, different, unique produce and goods, from an excellent range of small accomplished private businesses throughout the Falkirk District. Long may this continue!
However, we are all aware that the expansion and diversification of the major giants has had profound and continued negative effects on the small private individual business.
We can all benefit from promoting local business, and fostering a strong sense of community. Through this, Falkirk can continue to grow, develop and prosper, and we can all continue to benefit.
Does anyone else have special memories of old favourite retailers in Falkirk?? I’m probably giving my age away, but here are some of mine……..
YOUNG’S department store. This used to occupy the space currently occupied by Rosie’s nightclub. They sold a wide range of hardware goods, but my own happy memories surround dolls… Young’s stocked doll’s and accessories upstairs, and I spent many a happy morning choosing treats with a very patient Grandma!
CHELSEA GIRL. This was my favourite trendy clothes shop at the time.
GOLDBERGS. This was a department store in the old Calendar Riggs. Sold lovely, quality clothes and fashion items.
CRAWFORD’S. Small local general store in Main Street, Larbert. Sold all essential groceries, including sweets with the personal family touch.
JOHNNY DALRYMPLE. Dalrymple’s van came round the streets of Bainsford, selling fresh produce around the houses. The van always exuded wonderful smells of fresh food.
PATTERSON’S NEWSAGENT. Patterson’s was situated on the corner of Carron Road, Bainsford. Sold a super range of comics and children’s novelties.

100th birthday brings flood of memories for good old Gildford
GILDFORD — Don Miller, his son and three triplet grandsons spent last weekend restoring the aging reservoir infrastructure built 100 years ago by the Great Northern Railway.
